The most amazing Indonesian volcano is Ijen Crater or Kawah Ijen (2,600m or 8,660ft tall), the "Green Crater" from Eastern Java, has a one-kilometer-wide turquoise-colored acid crater lake and an active sulphur mine. Due to its easy accessibility tourists regularly visit the crater.
The Trek to the crater is about 3 kms of which only about 1.5 km is a bit of a steep climb. The hike is along a well-used path that is marked almost every few hundred meters. Past the halfway mark hikers have some excellent views of distant mountains & extinct volcanoes as well as a former volcanology viewing post which serves drinks. Hardworking sulphur miners displaying their great strength, balance & work ethic as they go about their business trying to earn their living. View at the top of the mountain is breathtaking. A comment from a visitor: “one of the most beautiful landscape ever seen!” you must arrive early in the morning, on the crater to see the sulphur lake.
